Couples Counseling in Carlsbad

Helping couples move beyond hurt and rebuild connection, security, and trust

Relationships can be deeply fulfilling—and deeply challenging. Couples counseling provides a supportive place to understand what is happening between partners, improve communication, and begin changing patterns that are causing distance or conflict.

We offer couples counseling for partners throughout Carlsbad and North County San Diego, with telehealth available across California.

When the Same Patterns Keep Returning

Couples often seek counseling when conversations lead to the same arguments, connection feels harder to reach, or past hurt continues affecting the relationship.

Partners do not need to be in crisis or agree on every concern before beginning. Counseling creates space for both people to feel heard, better understand their relationship dynamics, and identify healthier ways to move forward.

Couples Counseling May Help You

  • Understand how past experiences affect current dynamics

  • Communicate and listen more effectively

  • Interrupt unproductive or hurtful patterns

  • Reduce power struggles and negotiate healthier solutions

  • Deepen emotional and physical intimacy

  • Rebuild trust following infidelity

  • Work through anger, disappointment, or financial conflict

  • Address sexual concerns and improve satisfaction

  • Navigate parenting challenges together

  • Approach separation with greater clarity and respect

The way partners communicate and manage conflict also shapes what children learn about relationships, boundaries, and emotional connection. Developing healthier relationship skills can benefit the entire family.

Our work draws from established relationship approaches, including Harville Hendrix’s IMAGO Therapy and John Gottman’s relationship research.

Is Couples Counseling Right for Us?

Couples counseling works best when both partners want things to feel better, even if you are not sure how to get there. Many of the couples Kristin sees are not at war with each other. They care about each other, but they feel stuck, disconnected, or tired of having the same conversation.

Couples counseling may be a good fit if:

  • You love each other but feel more like roommates than partners

  • Small disagreements escalate quickly or end in silence

  • One of you wants to talk and the other shuts down

  • You are adjusting to a big change: a move, a new baby, a job loss, or an empty nest

  • Trust has been shaken and you both want to repair it

  • You want to strengthen a good relationship before problems grow

Support for Couples Facing Infertility and Adoption

Infertility and adoption can test even the strongest relationship. Partners often grieve, hope, and cope on different timelines. One may want to talk about every appointment while the other needs space. Medical decisions, financial pressure, and the emotional ups and downs of treatment or waiting can leave both people feeling alone.

Kristin offers a steady place for couples in Carlsbad and North County to talk through these experiences together. Counseling can help you:

  • Understand and respect each other's ways of coping

  • Make difficult decisions as a team

  • Protect your connection and intimacy during treatment or the adoption process

  • Process grief, loss, or disappointment

  • Prepare emotionally for becoming parents through adoption

What to Expect in Couples Counseling

Your first session. You and your partner meet with Kristin together. She will ask what brought you in, what you each hope will change, and a bit about your history as a couple. The goal is for both of you to feel heard, not judged or blamed.

Ongoing sessions. Sessions focus on what is happening between you right now: the conversations that go sideways, the moments of disconnection, and the needs underneath them. Kristin helps you slow those moments down, understand each other, and practice new ways of responding.

Between sessions. Many couples get small, practical exercises to try at home so progress continues between appointments.

How long it takes. Every couple is different. Some come in for a focused set of sessions around a specific issue; others prefer longer-term support. Kristin will talk with you about pacing and goals as you go.

Our Approach

Imago Relationship Therapy focuses on how early experiences shape what we need and how we react in a relationship, and uses structured dialogue so each partner can truly hear the other. Dr. John Gottman's research highlights the everyday habits that help relationships last, such as turning toward each other, managing conflict with respect, and building friendship and trust.

Kristin combines these with a warm, practical style, with the goal of helping you change the patterns that keep you stuck, not just talk about them.

Couples Counseling or Marriage Counseling?

You do not have to be married to benefit from couples counseling. Kristin works with dating, engaged, married, and long-term partners. If you are preparing for marriage or want support specific to your marriage, see our Premarital & Marriage Counseling page. If one partner wants support on their own, Individual Therapy can be a helpful place to start.

Couples Counseling in Carlsbad: Common Questions

Where are sessions held?
In person at our Carlsbad office, 5055 Avenida Encinas, Suite 100, Carlsbad, CA 92008, or by secure telehealth anywhere in California.

Do both partners have to attend?
Couples counseling usually includes both partners. If one partner is hesitant, Kristin can talk with you about options for getting started.

Can couples counseling help after infidelity?
Yes. Rebuilding trust after an affair is one of the most common reasons couples seek counseling. The work focuses on honesty, understanding what happened, and deciding together how to move forward.

What if we are thinking about separating?
Counseling can still help. Some couples use it to reconnect; others use it to separate with more clarity, respect, and less harm to children.

Do you see couples from outside Carlsbad?
Yes. Kristin works with couples from Oceanside, Encinitas, Vista, San Marcos, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and across California by telehealth.
